Emma Gündel (born April 29, 1889 in Hamburg , † February 16, 1968 in Reinbek ), married Gündel-Knacke, was a German children's book author.

Live and act

Emma Gündel trained as a teacher in Hamburg and worked as such until around 1932. She then worked as a freelance children's and youth literature writer. Gündel had her first major success with the girl's book Three Girls and a Bet. A cheerful story for young girls that appeared in 1937 and had a print run of 15,000. She became famous for her Elke volumes. The volumes of the Elke series were distributed in 1,600,000 copies from 1937 to 1967. They appear in a new version since 1968. Gündel's books were published until 1945 by Hanns-Jörg Fischer-Verlag, Berlin / Leipzig / Vienna, at times by Anton Verlag, Leipzig, and after 1945 by Boje-Verlag, Stuttgart. Translations have been published in Dutch, Danish and Swedish.

Classification of the work

Gündel continued with the Elke series

"Continued the tradition of the 'sentimental' young girl's book" and "perfected, alongside Magda Trott , Else Ury , Martha Schlinkert , Hans Erich Seuberlich etc., the principle of the 'series' well into the 20th century."

The psychological effect of the girl's book girl Elke on the then young reader (around 10 to 12 years old) is, among other things. a. in that the series is aimed at the reading female audience

“Offers a complete alternative to their prepubescent insecurity and confirms the socially mediated role expectations. The 'stenciled lead figure' Elkes allows easy identification and compensation of one's own difficulties, at the same time enjoyment of selflessness and the happiness that results from it.

Beyond all typical role expectations of the time, Gündel's books also contain students and working women (e.g. Elke's sister Antje) or single fathers (In Ein kleine Wort das Wunder tat , 1939). In her dog story Momme und Mucki, die Freunde (1949) she even tries a kind of "coming to terms with the past": the two dogs love each other despite different breeds and the adult main character, a teacher, is arrested for comments critical of the regime and can no longer teach.
