Hans Erich Seuberlich

Hans Erich Seuberlich (born September 8, 1920 in Riga ; † December 25, 1984 in Meckenheim ) was a German writer who was particularly popular as a children's book author in the 1950s. In 1956 he became a career officer (most recently: Colonel ) and military writer.

Life

Hans Erich Seuberlich spent his school days in Riga. He took part voluntarily in World War II and was last lieutenant . He lived in Posen, where he worked as a clan researcher and obtained Aryan evidence . After his escape from American captivity, he continued his self-taught education. From 1947 to 1956 he lived as a freelance writer in Vienna, Salzburg and Bad Reichenhall. His first book, the novel "Tomorrow forgotten" was published by Adolf Swoboda & Sons in Vienna in 1948. His first series of books for young people about the boy Robbi and his girlfriend Reni appeared in the same publishing house from 1949 to 1951. Hans Erich Seuberlich became known through his collaboration with the Boje-Verlag. In addition to licensed editions of the Robbi and Reni stories, Boje published three series of girls' books and two individual volumes by Seuberlich. The best known was the ten-volume series about Bettina, the Vespa girl. As “uncle” Seuberlich from Boje-Verlag, he gained a loyal readership. In his books he repeatedly asked his young readers - mostly girls between 10 and 12 years of age - for letters and their opinions on his stories. By 1957 he had written 28 books for young people with a total circulation of 1.4 million.

He then became an active soldier and colonel in the German Armed Forces . He worked on military books and articles, was press officer for the Kyffhäuserbund and vice-president of EUROMIL (European Organization of Military Associations). In 1977 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

After completing his military service, he returned to work as a freelance writer in 1980. With his last series of girls' books about the heroine Tina, a modern version of the Bettina series, he tried to build on earlier successes. Hans Erich Seuberlich was chairman of the German-Baltic Society in 1984 and briefly general secretary of the Federation of Expellees in December 1984 .
