Emmy Andriesse

Emmy Andriesse ( Emmy Eugenie Andriesse; born January 14, 1914 in The Hague ; † February 20, 1953 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch photographer . In addition to Éva Besnyő , Cas Oorthuys and Carel Blazer , she is considered a representative of the Nieuwe Fotografie (“New Photography”) trend .

Life

Andriesse was born as the daughter of Abraham Andriesse and Else Fuld into a Jewish-liberal family.

From 1933 to 1937 Emmy Andriesse attended the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, especially the advertising design course at u. a. Gerrit Kiljan , Paul Schuitema and Piet Zwart . This field of study was re-established in 1929 and the media photography and film played a particularly large role in it.

In 1937 she and u. a. Cok de Graaff and Nico Jesse took part in the exhibition 'Photo' 37 'in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam with their photo report In de Jordaan . In the same year Emmy Andriesse moved to Amsterdam and worked as a reportage photographer for various newspapers and magazines.

In 1941 Andriesse married the graphic artist and painter Dick Elffers and had two sons with him: Cas (1943–1945) and Joost (* 1946).

Emmy Andriesse became known through photographs that she secretly took during the occupation of Amsterdam by the National Socialists . She was a member of the group founded by Fritz Kahlenberg , De Ondergedoken Camera ("The Submerged Camera"), which documented the occupation of the Netherlands during the Second World War between 1943 and 1945 .

After the war, Emmy Andriesse specialized in reportage , portrait and fashion photography .

In 1953, Emmy died of cancer at the age of 39.
