Coordinates: 53 ° 32 ′ 50.3 ″  N , 9 ° 57 ′ 48 ″  E The Empire Riverside Hotel is one of the largest and highest hotels in Hamburg .

geography

The hotel is centrally located in the southern part of Hamburg's St. Pauli district , between the Reeperbahn and the Elbe , not far from the Davidwache , diagonally across from Herbertstraße . The location is on a high point in the district with a direct view of the main churches , the Rickmer Rickmers museum ship , St. Pauli Landungsbrücken , musical theater Der König der Löwen , Hamburger Hafen , Köhlbrandbrücke , dry dock Elbe 17 and Airbus plant Finkenwerder .

History and construction phase

The hotel stands on the historical site of the old Bavaria site . The city of Hamburg leased the area south of the Reeperbahn on St. Pauli in 1863 to the Bavaria-St.Pauli brewery . After 140 years of brewing history, the plant was closed and demolished in 2003. In 2001 a group of investors led by property owner Willi Bartels acquired the property. Since the demolition, numerous residential and commercial buildings with a total volume of 350 million euros have been built there. This ensemble of buildings is also called the harbor crown because - viewed from the Elbe - it has three tall buildings that look like the prongs of a three-pointed crown. The hotel stands for the left point of the crown.

The foundation stone was laid on November 22, 2005. The topping-out ceremony took place on April 17, 2007. The hotel finally opened after a two-year construction period on November 1, 2007. The construction costs amounted to almost 67 million euros.

Hotel building

The hotel clearly towers over the surrounding houses

British architect David Chipperfield designed both the facade and the interior . The lobby is three stories high. Between the 4th and 20th floors there are 327 rooms as well as event rooms and restaurants. The hotel consists of a lower building complex and a 75 meter high tower. The facade is clad in bronze. The individual rooms have panoramic windows that extend from the ceiling to the floor. A total of 6,400 square meters of glass were built in. The rooms are divided into four categories: 233 Riverside rooms offer the normal standard for this hotel. The 58 deluxe rooms are more fully equipped and larger than the standard rooms. The 24 Riverview rooms have two completely glazed wall surfaces and thus a special view. After all, the twelve junior suites are even more spacious than the rooms in the other three categories. The hotel itself is in the 4½-star category. There is a well-attended cocktail bar on the 20th floor. The choice of location and the construction of the hotel were not without controversy. The luxury hostel is part and symbol of a gentrification process that has been going on for years in the district, which, from the point of view of investors, enhances the district, but from the point of view of investment critics it causes social displacement. It is criticized that the new construction of upscale residential and commercial space increases surrounding rents and that established structures and the character of the quarter are lost.

The architecture of the building received the 2008 Architecture Prize from the Association of German Architects and the European Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects .
