The Herbert Street (to 1922 Henry Street or (different) Hinrich Street ) is a street in Hamburg , since the beginning of the development in the 19th century prostitution is used (today around 250 women). It is located on St. Pauli near the Reeperbahn .

history

Herbertstraße is about 100 meters long, in the houses the prostitutes sit on stools in cobblestone windows , present themselves and wait for customers or speak to male passers-by with the window open.

At the time of National Socialism , striptease and prostitution were prohibited . However, since a ban on the trade typical of St. Pauli could not be consistently enforced, these activities were only tolerated in one alley - in Herbertstrasse. In 1933 , the Gauleitung had screens installed at both ends of the street so that no one could see what was not supposed to be in passing . Signs have been attached to these barriers since the 1970s attempting to forbid minors and women from entering. These signs were put up by the police “to maintain public order” and at the request of the prostitutes. From a legal point of view, however, Herbertstrasse is a public path and can be entered de jure by everyone. The street is not named after a specific person, but part of a naming concept “male first names with alphabetically progressing first letter”, just like the neighboring Davidstraße, especially known for the Davidwache .

In 1964, Hamburg director Jürgen Roland shot scenes with prostitutes on Herbertstrasse for the film Police station Davidswache about the Davidwache on the Reeperbahn. From 1972 to 1990 Domenica Niehoff worked here as a prostitute and dominatrix . In the 1980s, Niehoff was the most prominent prostitute in Germany through numerous media appearances.

The radio station Energy Hamburg received a fine of 10,000 euros from the Hamburg Institute for New Media in September 2005 , as it had broadcast the program “Morning Live from Herbertstrasse” in March, the content of which was due to “the harmful representation of sexual practices and offers from prostitutes “Was complained about. During the broadcast, the studio presenter switched to two reporters and two prostitutes on Herbertstrasse several times, with the two prostitutes reporting in detail about their services.

In December 2015, the Hamburg police issued handouts to warn of increased fraud in the red-light district, among others. a. also in houses on Herbertstrasse.
