Emrys Hughes

Emrys Hughes (born July 10, 1894 in Tonypandy , † October 18, 1969 ) was a Welsh Labor Party politician , who is now primarily known as the son-in-law and biographer of Keir Hardie .

Life

Hughes was born in Tonypandy , Wales, to the clergyman JR Hughes. He attended Abercynon Council School , then Mountain Ash Secondary School, and finally City of Leeds Training College, and became a professional teacher himself. During the First World War he was imprisoned as a conscientious objector. In 1924 he married Nan Hardie, the daughter of Keir Hardie. Hughes became editor of the socialist magazine Forward .

In February 1946 Hughes became a Member of the British Parliament for the Scottish constituency of South Ayrshire . He was re-elected in the 1950, 1951, 1955, 1959, 1964 and 1966 elections.

Hughes has written several works on political figures, including Winston Churchill , Keir Hardie , Harold Macmillan and Sydney Silverman .
