Emu Park is a city in east Queensland , Australia , with a population of 4,575 in 2016.

Emu Park is 30 kilometers to the west of Rockhampton , the Bruce Highway (A1) and the Fitzroy River and is around 650 kilometers north of Brisbane . The city is located directly on the Coral Sea .

history

Great emu

In the 1860s, Rockhampton residents out fishing discovered a particularly scenic spot on the coast. They founded a resort there where inland residents could escape the summer heat. The place was originally named Hewittville after one of the fishermen . Because of the many emus ( Dromaius novaehollandiae ) in the area and the park-like layout of the place, it was renamed Emu Park .

In 1888 he received a rail connection to Rockhampton and enjoyed increasing popularity. The railway line was discontinued in 1964 due to insufficient utilization, as roads now also led to Emu Park.

The city's landmark, the Singing Ship Monument , was built in 1970 in memory of the British navigator and explorer Captain James Cook , who sailed past the coast of today's Emu Park 200 years earlier, namely in 1770. In light breezes or strong sea winds, the pipes, sails and rigging of the monument emit various singing tones.
