The Encyclop (a) edia of Mathematics is a mathematical lexicon published by Springer Verlag , the editor of which was Michiel Hazewinkel from 1987 to 2002 .

It comprises over 8,000 articles and 50,000 terms (as of 2002) and is available in the form of a 13-volume book edition (including three supplementary volumes and an index volume), a CD-ROM and a freely accessible website . The Encyclopaedia of Mathematics is originally based on a translation into English of the Russian-language lexicon Matematitscheskaja Enziklopedija published by Iwan Matwejewitsch Vinogradow in 1977 in the Soviet Union, but has since been expanded and updated considerably. The first 10-volume print edition was published 1987–1994 by Kluwer Academic Publishing, which also published the three supplementary volumes in 1997, 2000 and 2002. In 2003, Kluwer Academic Publishing was taken over by Springer.

Until November 29, 2011, Springer made the online version of the encyclopedia edition from 2002 freely available at the URL http://eom.springer.de/ . Since then, this URL no longer links to the original encyclopedia, but rather to a mathematics wiki of the same name operated jointly by Springer and the European Mathematical Society . This builds on the content of the 2002 edition and is now being updated and expanded according to the wiki principle. Extensions and newly created articles are under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike License , while the copyright of the old texts remains with Springer. An editorial team made up of international mathematicians with Ulf Rehmann as editor-in-chief checks the correctness of future changes on behalf of the European Mathematical Society and has the last word on all editorial decisions. In addition to the old URL, this new version of the encyclopedia is now also available at https://encyclopediaofmath.org/ .
