Michiel Hazewinkel (born June 22, 1943 ) is a Dutch mathematician who studies algebra and applied mathematics .

Hazewinkel studied mathematics and physics at the University of Amsterdam (candidate exam 1963) and received his doctorate there in 1969 under Frans Oort ( Abelian extensions of local fields ). He then worked as a post-doctoral student at the Steklow Institute in Moscow in 1969/70 . In 1970 he became a lecturer (lecturer) and in 1972 professor at the University of Rotterdam . At the same time he taught in Antwerp from 1973 to 1975. In 1973 he was at Harvard University . From 1982 he headed the Department of Pure Mathematics and from 1988 the Department of Algebra, Geometry and Analysis at the CWI in Amsterdam , but continued to teach in Rotterdam until 1985 and then at the University of Utrecht . In 1995 he was a visiting professor at the University of Bordeaux I .

From 1987 to 2002 he was editor of the 13-volume Encyclopaedia of Mathematics . It originated from a Russian encyclopedia. From 1995 he was editor of the Handbook of Algebra (9 volumes) at Elsevier .

In 1986 he was the founder and first President of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI).
