history

The first Europeans in the region were the Portuguese , who also founded several bases on Flores. In 1601 the locals besieged the Portuguese in Ende. Nominally, the Portuguese had sovereignty, but the real power of government was held by native Rajas. Ende was the seat of a kingdom that existed towards the end of the 18th century.

In 1851 the Portuguese governor José Joaquim Lopes de Lima , without authorization from Lisbon , sold Maumere and other areas on the Lesser Sunda Islands that were under Portuguese sovereignty to the Netherlands for 200,000 florins. Lisbon did not recognize the sale and had Lopes arrested. He died on the way back to Europe. From 1854 the agreements were renegotiated. The sale was finally confirmed in the Lisbon Treaty . The ratification took place in 1859. According to the treaty, the population could keep their Catholic faith.

In the wars of Watu Api and Mari Longa (1916–1917), Nipa Do led rebellions against the Dutch colonial rulers. In 1934 the national leader Sukarno , who would later become the first president of Indonesia, was exiled by the Dutch colonial government after Ende.
