Enea Vico

Enea Vico (born January 29, 1523 in Parma , Italy , † August 18, 1567 in Ferrara , Italy) was an Italian engraver and author .

Life

Vico came from a noble family. His mother died at birth and his father when he was two years old. He began his professional career in Parma and Rome . In the years 1541 to 1542 he made 24 sheets with grotesques for the account of Tommaso Barlachi . He developed his style after Marcantonio Raimondi and was the most famous engraver in Italy during his lifetime.

A series of engravings from antique vases by Vico is known from 1543, which the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig now owns. He then went to Florence , where he made engravings for the Grand Duke of Tuscany , Cosimo I de 'Medici, after a painting by Michelangelo . In 1550 he stayed in Augsburg and in the following year and 1557 published two volumes with engravings on the women of Augsburg, the Donne Auguste . In the years 1555 to 1557 he stabbed a number of ancient medals in Parma for his book on the subject published in 1558. After a stay in Venice he went to the court of Ferrara to Alfonso II d'Este . There he made about 500 more engravings in the Ducal Palace of Ferrara until his death.

Vico was a member of the Venetian Accademia dei Pellegrini .
