Engelbert Engemann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engelbert Engemann OSB (born May 14, 1717 in Welda ; † February 6, 1796 in the Huysburg Monastery ) was abbot of the Huysburg Benedictine Monastery .

After finishing school in Welda, he entered a Benedictine monastery (probably in one of the monasteries in the Paderborn monastery) and studied theology and philosophy there. After his religious vows on June 11, 1738 he was u. a. for twelve years cathedral preacher in Minden Cathedral . Like the other cathedral preachers, he was recommended by the abbot of the Huysburg monastery, who apparently had the right to propose and appoint the cathedral preacher. Engemann first gave a trial sermon in the cathedral. When Conrad Nolte was elected abbot of the Huysburg monastery in 1756, Engemann was recalled for another job within the monastery. He was the economist of the monastery courtyard at Anderbeck near Oschersleben (Bode) for 25 years before he was elected abbot of the Huysburg monastery in 1781. The monastery, which has been part of the diaspora since the Reformation , was mostly inhabited by monks from the Paderborn monastery. During his 15-year term in office, he renovated the monastery church and ensured a balanced budget. He was considered a kind and meek abbot. During his tenure, Karl van Ess took his religious vows. Engelbert's grave is in the monastery church.
