Karl van Ess

Karl van Eß (contemporary also Carl van Ess ) (born September 25, 1770 in Warburg ; † October 21, 1824 in Huysburg ) was a German Benedictine , church historian and author.

After finishing school in the Warburg Dominican School, he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Marienmünster . He took the religious vows under Abbot Engelbert Engemann in the Huysburg Monastery . He was ordained a priest in 1794. In 1796 he became a lecturer and in 1801 refused an offer at the University of Frankfurt an der Oder . In the same year he became prior of the monastery.

With his younger cousin Leander van Eß , he translated the New Testament into German . After the dissolution of the monastery, he was appointed by the Prince-Bishop of Hildesheim and Paderborn, Franz Egon von Fürstenberg , to the Episcopal Commissioner (with the power of a Vicar General ) in the “Saale and Elbe Department” (of the Kingdom of Westphalia ) and in the Helmstedt district (for the districts of Magdeburg, Halberstadt and Helmstedt). Under Prussian rule he remained "Episcopal General Commissioner for the communities in Magdeburg and Halberstadt". He was the author of several books on theology and religion.
