life and work

In 1767 he was accepted into the Franciscan monastery in Rheine and attended the adjoining high school, where Bernard Overberg was his classmate, among others . From 1772 Kistemaker studied theology and philology at the young University of Münster . He was ordained a priest on December 22nd, 1777.

From 1778 he worked as a teacher at the Paulinum grammar school , whose director he became in 1794 after the death of Caspar Zumkley . At the same time he became head of the Pauline Library . From 1786 he was also offered a chair for ancient languages at the University of Münster.

After the University of Paderborn had awarded him a doctorate in philosophy, Kistemaker was appointed Professor of Biblical Exegesis at the University of Münster in 1795 . In 1799 he received a canonical at the St. Mauritz Abbey .

In addition to his work at school and university, Kistemaker was a member of the Consistory of the Province of Westphalia from 1816 to 1818 and since 1823 a member of the Münster Cathedral Chapter .

Kistemaker fell ill in 1824 and retired in 1825 after a series of strokes. He spent the following years of life in physical and mental paralysis.

During his long career, Kistemaker wrote several Latin, Greek and German language textbooks to support his teaching, which remained in use until after his death in Münster. His emphatically ecclesiastical attitude, however, led to a differentiated assessment of his writings.

In addition, Kistemaker published a number of translations from modern European and Oriental languages, in particular a translation of the New Testament and exegetical works.

In 1787 he was accepted as an external member of the Electoral Palatinate German Society in Mannheim, founded by Elector Karl Theodor , for his preparatory work on the book Critique of the Greek, Latin and German Language , published in 1793 .

The Prussian education administration honored him by appointing him in 1826/27 as the first Rector magnificus of the University of Münster.

In 1829, already severely affected by his illness, on the 50th anniversary of his teaching post he was made knight of the Red Eagle Order, third class.
