Halle02 opened its doors to visitors for the first time in April 2002. The originally time-limited project of the Contrast Studio planned to combine music events and exhibitions in one place. In the following years over 30 exhibitions were realized. However, at the end of 2005 these projects had to be terminated due to insufficient funding. From then on it was decided to concentrate as much as possible on concerts and dance events. In autumn 2005 the “small hall” was opened next to Halle02. This is now known as Halle_01 and, in addition to the large Halle02, should offer space for smaller events.

In 2006 Halle02 faced problems again. The roof of the building was classified as in danger of collapse and the permanent closure of the premises threatened. However, on February 16, 2006, the Heidelberg City Council decided to subsidize the renovation of the roof and thereby preserve the building. Between January and April 2009 Gunther von Hagen's exhibition of body worlds took place in the buildings of Halle02 . For this purpose, the music and cultural program was moved to a third adjoining hall. It was initially intended to serve as a temporary alternative, but then turned out to be very practical for various events and thus became Hall03. The Zollhofgarten on the grounds of Halle02 is open in the summer months. It lies in the middle of the old track system. Visitors can play beach volleyball or boules here during the day .

In 2010 the city of Heidelberg bought the building so that the lease for the premises in Halle02 could be extended. The cultural facility and the surrounding Zollhof are to be integrated into the campus area of the newly emerging Bahnstadt. After a long discussion, the local council decided in 2012 to sign a new lease and to invest 4.4 million euros in the renovation of the building. On July 24, 2013, the municipal council decided again on the future of halle02 and extended the lease for the operator for another ten years. After a year and a half of renovation, the renovated hall02 opened its gates for public viewing for the first time during the 2014 World Cup . In March 2015, the “club” of halle02 was finally inaugurated. This offers space for around 400 guests on 230 square meters and is characterized by a modern " Funktion One " sound system. Since Halle02 can be divided into two rooms, up to three events can take place at the same time in the entire building complex.

Concept and idea

Between 2002 and 2005, over 30 exhibitions by regional, national and international artists were realized in Halle02. The aim of the studio contrast was to unite visual arts and modern music and to let something new emerge from it.

The staged exhibits in Halle02 ranged from painting and photography to graffiti , video installations , sculptures and performance art . Mainly young progressive artists used Halle02 as a platform and thus had the chance to show their art to a broad and young audience. But established artists such as Marie Marcks or Klaus Staeck also use the premises of the industrial building for their works. Since 2005, various music events and parties have taken place in Halle02, also beyond the commercial boundaries.

program

The music program is varied. Various styles of music are represented at the various parties in the three halls. The program consists largely of drum and bass , hip-hop , indie , house and electro . In addition, concerts by bands from all over the world take place regularly. In addition, Halle02 can be rented for company events.
