Engelbert Sonneborn

Engelbert Sonneborn (born February 9, 1938 ) is a German retired career advisor and was the candidate of the Pirate Party and the party Die PARTTEI for the election of the German Federal President in 2017 .

Life

Sonneborn worked as a career advisor until his retirement. He is a regular voter for the CDU . Martin Sonneborn , a satirist , chairman of Die PARTTEI and a member of the European Parliament since 2014 , is his son.

Candidate for Federal President

Sonneborn's candidacy was announced in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung on February 5, 2017 by his son, Martin Sonneborn, who was sent to the 16th Federal Assembly at the suggestion of the pirate faction in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament . Sonneborn was selected because the preferred candidate Murat Kurnaz did not meet the criteria for the election of the Federal President because he was a Turkish citizen and not yet 40 years old. This consideration also matured when the new US President Donald Trump appointed his son-in-law Jared Kushner as an advisor. Another candidate asked by Die PARTTEI was the Hamburg red-light giant Kalle Schwensen , who refused.

Engelbert Sonneborn was officially presented on February 9, 2017 at a press conference at the Berliner Ensemble in Berlin. During the press conference, the politicians of the pirates and Martin Sonneborn answered all questions, while Engelbert Sonneborn remained silent as announced at the beginning. It remained that way until the election, as he would only speak as soon as he was paid for it (when he took office). Martin Sonneborn later stated in an interview a few months after the election that his father had already prepared a short text on social justice and grievances, but they came to the conclusion that silence would set himself apart from the other candidates better than one typical politician speech among many.

Sonneborn's political agenda focused on the term “ leisure ”.

Sonneborn was referring to the candidate of the grand coalition Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his role in relation to Murat Kurnaz .

In the election on February 12, 2017, the Pirate Party demanded no factional discipline from its eleven delegates . Although his son had only expected three votes and, to the best of his knowledge, several pirate representatives chose another candidate, Sonneborn received ten votes, including several from other parties, and was behind the elected 12th Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the other three Candidates last.
