Engelbert Thaler

Engelbert Anton Thaler (born February 28, 1956 in Traunstein ) is a German foreign language teacher . He is professor for didactics of the English language, literature and culture at the University of Augsburg . Thaler is considered the founder of balanced teaching .

Life

Engelbert Thaler studied English and social studies from 1977 to 1982 for the teaching post at the grammar school at the University of Munich . After passing the first  state examination , he completed his legal clerkship for teaching at the grammar school from 1982 to 1984 at the Ruperti grammar school in Mühldorf and at the Chiemgau grammar school in Traunstein. After he had completed the second state examination, he was the 1984-1988 school teacher working for English and social studies at the State Country Marquartstein. From 1988 to 2001 he worked as a senior lecturer in English and social studies at the Chiemgau-Gymnasium Traunstein, and he also acted as an English supervisor. From 1994 to 1997 he did his doctorate at the University of Munich on the subject of music video clips in English classes .

From 1999 to 2002 he worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Didactics in English Language and Literature . As a substitute, he held the professorship for Applied Linguistics and Media Didactics at the University of Munich from 2002 to 2003 . From the 2004/05 winter semester until the end of the 2010 summer semester, he worked as a professor for didactics of English language, literature and culture at the Freiburg University of Education . In 2007 he completed his habilitation in Munich in the didactics of English language and literature . Since the winter semester 2010/11 he has been Professor of English Didactics at the University of Augsburg .

Fields of activity

The current research focus of Thalers lies in the area of ​​methodology in foreign language teaching. His now more than 630 scientific publications deal in particular with the use of audiovisual media , the didactics of Anglo-American literature and the communication of so-called cultural studies . In addition, he is u. a. Editor of the textbook series "Access" and the specialist journal PRAXIS Fremdsprachunterricht . His research focuses on teacher training, improving the quality of teaching, didactics of modern media, literary didactics, intercultural learning, development of textbooks and teacher training. He regularly gives lectures on subject didactics to English teachers.
