history

The Kempten transmitter , which was put into operation in 1951 and dismantled in 1956, was located on the site .

From 1956 to 1979 there was a gravel pit on the site in which gravel was mined and processed. The gravel was delivered later and a concrete mixing plant was also operated. In 1980 garage production was given up. In 1981 the city council decided to recultivate the area . After an ideas and design competition, which included a possible residential development, the creation of allotment gardens or an industrial settlement, the decision was made to create a landscape park according to the plans of the renowned landscape architect Peter Kluska . The intention was to participate in the first Bavarian state horticultural show . However, due to time and cost pressures, this was put on file.

Kluska won the architecture competition with his idea of opening the basin created by gravel mining with a cut into the high bank of the Iller to the city. The gravel pit was deliberately shielded from the city by the high bank, now the park should be visual. At that time, the contour lines of the park were modeled with great effort so that a view of the St. Mang Church was possible from as many paths as possible. Originally a swimming pool was also planned, but it was put on hold for cost reasons. At the deepest point of the park there is a pond to which a stream leads.

In the major phase of redesigning the terrain, there were several embankments and the removal of steep walls up to 22 meters high with craggy slopes. Then around 2,300 trees and around 10,000 shrubs were planted and wildflower meadows were created.

Engelhaldepark was opened on June 24, 1989 under the then mayor Josef Höß .
