The English Church in Stockholm

The English Church ( Swedish Engelska kyrkan ) "St Peter and St Sigfrid" , is a church in the district of Östermalm in Stockholm . The sermons are given in English . The parish belongs to the Diocese in Europe of the Church of England .

The church

The church was originally designed in 1863 by British architect Gustavus W. Hamilton in Liverpool and completed by architect James Souttar. During the years 1864 to 1866, the church was first built in the west of the Norrmalm district and built with red sandstone from Roslagen in a neo-Gothic style, it resembles an English country church.

In 1913 the church was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt on its current location in the east of Östermalm. Here, at the eastern end of the newly created Strandvägen , a development plan with exclusive villas, the so-called Diplomatstaden, was created . One of the first mansions was the embassy for Great Britain and therefore it is believed that Princess Margaret of Connaught and Strathearn had committed to moving the church so that there would be an English church near the embassy. According to other sources, a cemetery located here, the garrison cemetery, should be supplemented with a church.

The cemetery

The cemetery of the Stockholm Garrison , Garnisonskyrkogården , has been where the English Church stands today since 1860 . In the past, NCOs, sergeants, flagjunkers and regimental drummers and their relatives were buried here. Some graves are still preserved. Here, for example, lie L. F. Hedlund, flag junior of the Kungliga Svea livgarde on horseback, awarded the medal of bravery and bearer of the St. George's Cross, as well as J. F. Braun, sergeant of the congregation andra livregementet and the sergeant Svante H. Ek with little Folke ( lilla Folke ) .
