English stairs with sculptures of the continents

The English Staircase is the main staircase of the Dresden Palace .

It was built as a grand staircase by Johann Georg Starcke as early as 1692 . In 1693 it was renamed English Steps , on the occasion of the investiture of Elector Johann Georg IV. As a knight of the English Order of the Garter . It was destroyed in a castle fire in 1701 and rebuilt from 1717 according to plans by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann . When Dresden was bombed in February 1945, the stairs were again almost completely destroyed. During the reconstruction of the Dresden Residenzschloss, the stairwell was gradually dismantled in 2005 and the reconstruction of the staircase began in 2006. After five years of construction, the reconstruction of the English Staircase was completed on March 29, 2010. The walls and ceilings of the stairwell were given their neo-baroque version from 1895, so the coats of arms of King Albert (Saxony) and Queen Carola Wasa (Sweden) are placed on the upper floor . The small sculptures on the landings represent four continents (America, Africa, Asia and Europe). They are copies of the neo-baroque figures by Bernhard Kurt Roch (1895) such as Putten u. In addition, the two chimneys made of marble and sandstone were restored.
