The Enipeas , also Varnichios , Lestinitsa / Lestenitsa or Avouras ( Greek Ενιπέας , Βαρνίχιος , Λεστινίτσα , Άβουρας ) is a river in the regional district of Elis . It is one of the larger tributaries of the Alfios . It runs in the west of the regional district and has a whole swarm of tributaries and torrents .

mythology

The Enipeas is named after an ancient sea deity. Enipeus (mythology) was Tire's lover .

course

The sources are near the place Neraida (gr. Νεράιδα Ηλείας) at an altitude of 350 m above sea level . They are known under the name Avra (Gr. Άβρα). At Neraida , the Paliopotamo (Παλιοπόταμο - "Old River") flows into the brook that comes from the south, from the place Kryoneri (Κρυονέρι - "Cold Water") . The Lestinitsa flows from there in a westward direction to the villages Grammatikos (Γραμματικός) and Latzi (Λατζόι), which is probably the name given to the alternative name Lestinitsa . There it enters a larger valley and turns more towards the south. At the village of Karoutes (Καρούτες) it takes up the waters of its largest tributary, the Alisios (Αλήσιος Βίκκος) and meanders in the plain further south, where it flows into the Alfios from the right and north opposite the village of Alfiousa (Αλφειούσα), for example 10 km west of ancient Olympia .

Catchment area

The Enipeas has a very limited catchment area. To the north of the area runs the Ladonas (Λαδώνας) with its tributaries as a competitor, to the east the Erymanthos gorge forms a straight and abrupt boundary, while in the south other small tributaries of the Alfios, such as B. Lalaiko (Λαλαίκκο Βίκκος), Kladeos (Κλάδεος Βκ.) And Pournareiko (Πουρναραίκο Βκ .; Κυθήριος Βκ.) Are among the competitors. The watershed forms a small ridge that stretches from the west, from Psili Rachi near Iraklia (Ηράκλεια) via Chelidoni (Χελιδόνι) and Lalas (Λάλας) to Achladini (Αχλαδινή, "pears") above the valley of the Erymanthos. Especially the tributary Paleopotamos lies in the area of the oak forest of Foli . In the west, the tributaries of the Kyras Langkadi (Κυράς Λαγκάδι Βκ.) In the coastal plain of Pyrgos are competitors.
