history

The core of the settlement dates back to before 1480. Doliana then belonged to the villages of the Zagorochoria and quickly acquired a reputation for being a rich village. Ali Pasha invaded Zagori in 1792 and made the place a tsfliki (τσιφλίκι), which meant that the inhabitants had to do labor for the Turks. However, these events did not stop residents from developing impressive initiatives. The first school was founded. But many residents also emigrated to Italy or the Danube principalities . In 1919 the village was recognized as a municipality by royal decree.

Attractions

At the entrance to the village is one of the oldest monuments from Byzantine times: The monastery church of Agios Dimitrios (Μετόχι Άγιος Δημήτριος). According to an inscription, it dates to the year 1127 AD. In the vicinity of the schools (elementary school and high school-lyceum) stands the bust of the great "teacher of the people" (δασκάλος του Γένους) Georgios Gennadios and the "oak of Father Kosmas" (πουρνάρά τορυ -Κοσμά) with a plaque with the inscription "Here spoke Saint Cosmas 1776". The marketplace is the main church "Gennisi tis Theotoku" (Γέννηση της Θεοτόκου - Birth of the Theotokos ). It was built on the initiative of Kosmas in 1790, also with financial support from Ali Pascha. Some two-story villas in the village are evidence of the profitable agriculture and viticulture . In the Lykoskoufi area (Λυκοσκούφι) you have a good view of the Tymfi massif . The monastery of Agios Iakovos (Αγίος Ιακώβος) was built in the 12th century and bears the name of the first abbot. It is dedicated to the "Ascension of the Theotokos" (Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου - Kimisi tis Theotokou) and was the first center of hagiography in the region , from which many students started out - not only hagiographers.
