The Enipeas ( Greek Ενιπέας ) is a brook and river in the Pieria regional district in Greece . It is probably the largest brook on Mount Olympus and flows into the Aegean Sea at Gritsa (Gr. Γρίτσα), the port of Litochoro . The Enipeas Gorge is a well-known hiking area and attracts many tourists with its untouched, wild beauty.

Surname

The Enipeas is named after an ancient sea deity. Enipeus was the lover of Tyro . According to another tradition, the singer Orpheus was torn by maenads in the Enipea gorge while Leto is said to have bathed in his waters .

course

The Enipeas arises from a whole series of mountain streams that arise at over 2000 m altitude, below the main summit of Mount Olympus. It bears its name from the point Prionia , where a somewhat larger spring rises near the hiking trail E4 at an altitude of 1300 m. One kilometer below it also flows into the Melitzani stream. The Enipeas runs largely in an easterly direction and falls with a steep gradient to the valley. In two kilometers it overcomes 200 meters in altitude, passes the former monastery of Agios Dionysios and continues there through the deeply cut gorge. Further mountain streams flow to it from the mountain flanks. On the right side Kokona, Giannaka and Kastana are named. After about 4 km as the crow flies , it reaches the exit of the gorge below the mountain spur " Rachi " (Greek Ράχη). There it still flows at an altitude of 400 m. North of Litochoro it flows in a deep bed, where it reaches the plain below the place. There it is diverted to the north. To the north of Gritsa some unstable streams (Korakas and Galdrikas) flow to it, which arise in the northeastern flanks of the Olympos massif (Barba, μβαρμβα and Karyes, Καρυές). At its mouth it turns east again and flows into the Thermaic Gulf at Gritsa .

At its source, near Prionia, the brook forms a number of basins whose water temperature is only slightly above freezing point. Nevertheless, these pools are among the most popular bathing opportunities on Olympus.
