Enophrys is a genus of fish from the family of the stubborn bullheads (Psychrolutidae). The species of the genus occur near the coast in the northern Pacific from the Sea of Japan via the Sea of ​​Okhotsk , the Bering Sea , the Aleutian Islands , the coast of Alaska , Canada and the USA to Monterey Bay (California) and Santa Catalina Island . They live from the intertidal zone to depths of around 380 meters.

Enophrys species are large-headed fish with a large mouth and bony crests on the skull. They reach a length of 17 to 37 cm and, with the exception of a number of very large scales, are completely without scales on either side of the back. The upper spine of the gill cover is very long. The pelvic fins are very small.

Fin formula : dorsal VII – IX / 8–20, anal 0 / 6–15, ventral 3 (2).

Enophrys can be distinguished from the similar genus Hemilepidotus by the lack of a row of scales below the lateral line , from Myoxocephalus by the rows of scales on the dorsal sides that myoxocephalus are missing.
