Enrico De Negri

Enrico De Negri (born August 22, 1902 in Carrara , † July 16, 1990 in Pisa ) was an Italian philosopher, Romanist and Italianist.

life and work

De Negri studied in Pisa, graduated from the Scuola Normale Superiore in 1926 and completed his habilitation in 1933. From 1926 to 1938 he went to Cologne as a lecturer for Italian (from 1930 to 1933 under Leo Spitzer ). From 1938 to 1943 he was head of the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague and visiting professor at the university (with Erhard Preiziger ). From 1944 to 1945 he taught philosophy in Florence, then until 1961 Italian at Columbia University . During this time he was a Guggenheim Fellow (1953) and visiting professor at Princeton University (1956–1957 at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study) and at the Free University of Berlin.

De Negri was professor of Italian at the University of California, Berkeley from 1961 to 1971 and full professor of the philosophy of history at La Sapienza University in Rome from 1971 to 1972 . From 1972 to 1977 he taught at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa .
