life and work

Enrique José de Larrañaga was on March 19, 1900 in San Andres de Giles in the province of Buenos Aires , the son of Basque born immigrants. From 1916 he studied art at the National College of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, where he was professor of drawing from 1921.

At the end of 1924 Larrañaga traveled to Europe and visited Italy, France, Belgium, England and Spain, where he stayed for several years. He lived and worked in Cordoba and Madrid . In 1926 he was awarded at the Venice Biennale . In 1931 he returned to Buenos Aires. In the following years he received several national awards in Argentina, including the 1936 Grand Prix des Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales for the picture Entre telones (Behind the Scenes) .

In 1937 he married Isabel Roca. In the same year the picture Mi esposa (My wife) was created , for which Larrañaga was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition . In 1945 Larrañaga became director of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "Prilidiano Pueyrredón" in Buenos Aires.

Larrañaga's artistic career was marked by different phases in which he used different traditional techniques in his pictures. Mainly portraits, still lifes and landscapes were created. The surroundings of the city of Tandil in particular inspired him to create numerous works. The world of the circus and its characters, especially the clowns, characterize the last stage of his work.

As a supporter of Peronism , Larrañaga was politically persecuted as a Peronist artist and painter of the regime after the military coup in September 1955 . His works have been removed from public collections. Several of his paintings, including portraits of Juan Perón and Eva Perón , were believed to have been destroyed.

Enrique de Larrañaga died on July 29, 1956 in Buenos Aires. Although Larrañaga was one of the most awarded Argentine artists in the first half of the twentieth century, he was quickly forgotten after his death.

From December 17, 2013 to February 28, 2014, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires presented Larrañaga's work in a comprehensive retrospective .
