description

Aigen belonged to the Passau bishopric from the late 12th century until 1803 and, together with a few neighboring towns, formed an enclave surrounded by the Duchy of Bavaria . In Aigen am Inn, Prince-Bishop Leonhard set up an episcopal nursing office in the 15th century .

The monumental buildings that define the ensemble's appearance date from this period. The broad, curved street axis is dominated to the west by the late Gothic parish church of St. Stephan . The parsonage and the so-called brotherhood floor, which faces the street and also functions as a gatehouse at the entrance to the cemetery and the church, are directly assigned to it.

In the northeast, the episcopal nursing office building is the dominant building on the street. The mighty cubic tuff square structure was built in the 15th century in the style of the Inn-Salzach cities and renovated several times in the 17th century after fires.

The late baroque prince-bishop's summer palace at Klosterstrasse 2, already on the outskirts of the village, adjoins to the northeast. Between these buildings there are inns, farmhouses and craftsmen's houses, mostly from the 19th century, in a relatively closed development. These are mostly gable facing the street and have half-hipped or gable roofs . There are also restaurants and shops from the turn of the century.
