Ensemble town center

With the northeast part of Herrenstrasse, the ensemble encompasses the historical center of the large old fishing and farming village on the left bank of the Inn, as well as the maintenance authority. Aigen, originally called Aufhofen im Aigen, has been documented since 1010, belonged to the Passau Monastery from the late 12th century to 1806 and, together with some neighboring towns, formed an enclave surrounded by the Duchy of Bavaria and remote from the rest of the closed Hochstift area. In this part of the country, Prince-Bishop Leonhard set up his own episcopal nursing office in the 15th century, and these historical processes are vividly illustrated in the monumental buildings that define the ensemble. The broad, curved street axis is dominated to the west by the late Gothic parish church, which bears the patronage of the Passau patron St. Stephan and whose construction was built under the influence of the Passau ecclesiastical government; the rectory and the so-called brotherhood floor, which faces the street and also functions as a gatehouse at the entrance to the cemetery and the church, are directly assigned to it. In the northeast, the episcopal nursing office building is the dominant building on the street. The mighty cubic tufa block system was built in the 15th century in the house style of the Inn-Salzach cities and renovated several times in the 17th century after fires. The small, late-baroque summer palace of the prince-bishop, already located on the outskirts of the village, adjoins to the northeast. Between these buildings, inns, farms and craftsmen's houses mostly from the 19th century, which are mostly gable to the street and have half-hipped or saddle roofs, are lined up in a relatively closed development, as well as inns and shops from the turn of the century. The large number of inns is also explained by the needs of the important pilgrimage to the nearby St. Leonard Church, which has existed since the Middle Ages.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
