Ensemble town center Obernzell The market town of Obernzell, one of the main towns of the old bishopric of Passau, is located on the left bank of the Danube, just before the Upper Austrian border. In its historical extent, the place consists of an elongated street market on the banks of the Danube, the Kirchengasse branching off to the north in the middle with the parish church that towers behind the market square, the castle district, which is in front of the market to the east, and a small suburban area in the West. The place was formerly named after its high medieval owners, the Lords of Griesbach, also Griesbach in der Zell, and later Hafnerzell after its most famous handicraft production. Under Bishop Ulrich II (1215–22) he came to the Passau bishopric. In 1359 Bishop Gottfried confirmed the market rights. The marketplace, which defines the townscape, is likely to have been built or expanded in the 13th century. It is bordered by a southern and northern line of around 30 parcels each. The northern row has a great depth. It stretches backwards to the old market boundary, which has been marked with an avenue since the later 18th century by a street-like street (hospital street). To the north, farm buildings and house gardens are assigned to the residential buildings on the market. In the middle of this row of parcels, the parish church found its place in a courtyard-like recess. Even if the baroque building is behind the houses on the market, its double tower facade towers above the bourgeois properties. The properties of the southern Marktzeile facing the Danube are less deep. Some of the buildings here also face the Danube river (Uferstrasse). In addition to house gardens and a few farm buildings, the waterfront of the town features late Baroque and Biedermeier, gable-independent residential and garden houses as well as individual manufacturing buildings. The development on the market square itself is closed. The plastered houses have two to three storeys and a lively variety of roofs; Eaves side houses alternate with half-hipped roof buildings, the steep gables are almost always behind horizontal or curved walls. In addition to the stately inns and boatmen's houses, which mostly got their exterior design after the great fire in 1839 , but are essentially much older, there are still some craftsmen's houses with protruding flat roofs. In the east, the street area has its focus in the old care castle, a late Gothic complex formerly surrounded by water, expanded in the late 16th century, which is reminiscent of the Passau rule in Obernzell. The pre-market-like area in the west, on the other hand, is determined by simple rows of small eaves-sided residential houses, which were probably mostly built on a changed plot structure after the fire in 1839. Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
