Marktplatz / Marktstrasse
( location )
Ensemble Marktplatz and Marktstrasse The ensemble includes the main street of Untergriesbach with its buildings and the dominant building of the parish church with old cemetery and rectory.

The west-east running, very straight road space, which is expanded to the square, lies in the course of the old thoroughfare on a free mountain ridge. This location, which is characteristic of the market settlements in the lower Bavarian Forest, was expressed in the old name of the place "Griesbach am high market". The oldest part of the settlement can be found in the area of the parish church St. Michael at the west end of the market. From here the regular expansion of Marktstrasse to the east took place, which is probably connected with the granting of market rights by Bishop Otto von Passau in 1260. At the north-eastern corner of the high churchyard wall, above which the former schoolhouse rises, the middle-class closed development begins. The mostly two-storey plastered gables, eaves side and half-hipped houses usually go back to the 18th and 19th centuries; some are characterized by gothic cantilever portals, facade stucco in the forms of the late baroque and facade structures in classicist forms. The rural, far protruding flat gable roofs, which have been preserved as well as some advance walls or gables, are important for the lively effect of the square.

The "Marktstrasse" forms the upper eastern part of the square, its outer part drops off to the east. Their development is similar, but simpler than in the western part of the ensemble; Individual peasant houses have survived among the properties, which are integrated into the plaza walls on the street side and have courtyards to the rear. The poorly designed new building No. 17 is annoying in the street scene. An impressive highlight in the ensemble is the baroque parish church, which is essentially medieval and surrounded by the high cemetery, with its three high roofs and the tower, which visually complete the square in the west and whose appearance even in the higher-lying eastern parts of the course is still effective.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
