Ensemble Marktplatz Ortenburg
File number: E-2-75-138-1
Boundary: Marktplatz 1–30, 32, Unterer Markt 1
Up until 1805, Ortenburg was the central place of a very small county, surrounded by the Duchy or Electorate of Bavaria, but up to this point directly imperial . The market square, a north-south facing, closed built, in the layout probably High Medieval street square, is located at the foot of the Schlossberg, at some distance from the ancestral castle of the Counts of Ortenburg , who as dynasts in the High Middle Ages had large territorial holdings, then since the middle of the 13th Century were pushed back mainly by the Wittelsbach dukes.
The eastern long side of the square, which slopes towards the hillside of the castle, is higher than the western, valley-side front of the square. For this upper side, two- to three-storey plastered bourgeois eaves side houses, some of which are provided with sparse facade decorations, are characteristic, most of which were designed after the market fire of 1834. The three-storey gable building of the town hall is integrated into this row of houses, the former count's brewery sets a special accent at the north end of the square, referring to the former rule. On the west side, some mansard hipped roofs from the 18th century are also reminiscent of the Count's rule, but immediately next to them, plastered and open block buildings and characteristic tanner houses of the bourgeois-craft tradition of the small market founded by the counts in the Middle Ages. The space is conspicuously closed on its narrow sides. The effect of the square image is increased as well as by the two free-standing market fountains.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
