Erlau is a district of the Obernzell market in the Lower Bavarian district of Passau .

location

Erlau is about four kilometers west of Obernzell at the confluence of the Erlau into the Danube opposite the Krempelstein Castle .

history

Since the steep bank recedes a bit at the mouth of the Erlau, the Danube could be crossed here without great effort. However, settlements did not initially emerge in the swampy lowlands but on the heights. The hamlet of Erlau was first mentioned in a document in 1296. The old story of Erlaus took place between castles and farms. In 1367 the Battle of Erlau took place here, in which the troops of Bishop Albert III. von Winkel defeated the rebellious Passau citizens.

The Erlau formed the border between the regional courts of Passau and Wegscheid . The border between the district of Passau and the district of Wegscheid later ran here . The western Erlau was a district of the municipality of Kellberg in the district of Passau, while the eastern part of the municipality of Ederlsdorf in the district of Wegscheid. It was not until the regional reform in Bavaria that Erlau became an integral part of the Obernzell market. At that time, at the same time as the Wegscheid district was dissolved, with effect from July 1, 1972, the Ederlsdorf community was dissolved and incorporated into the Markt Obernzell with the Erlau district and the Kellberg community assigned its Erlau, Edlhof and Holzschleife districts to Obernzell.

The foundation stone for modern Eger was laid in 1861 with the establishment of a paper factory and in 1883 with a wood grinding machine in the Erlautal. With the construction of the Passau – Hauzenberg railway and the Erlau – Wegscheid railway , Erlau even became a railway junction. In 1942, due to the war, the headquarters of the Vogt company founded by Hans Vogt was relocated here. An air raid on Erlau train station in October 1944 left six people dead and numerous injured. Erlau was hit hard by the 1954 flood and the 2013 flood . Today, Erlau has more than 500 inhabitants and is largely shaped by the local businesses.
