Walter of Sourdeval

Walter von Sourdeval ( lat. Gualterius de Suradavalle ; French. Gauthier de Sourdeval ; † after 1154) was constable of Antioch and lord of Laitor.

He was a son of the Norman crusader Robert de Sourdeval from Sourdeval in Normandy . This had participated in the wake of Bohemond of Taranto in the First Crusade , was enfeoffed in the Principality of Antioch by 1114 at the latest with the rule of Laitor , about 25 km west-north-west of Bourzey , and fell in 1115 in the battle of Tell Danith.

Walter is documented as constable of Antioch in 1134 and 1135 ; in 1140 he no longer held this office.

With his wife named Sibylla († after 1135) he had a son, Robert von Sourdeval (before 1119-after 1163), who followed him as Lord of Laitor. In documents of Prince Bohemond III. a witness named Roger von Sourdaval appears between 1167 and 1183 ; it is unclear whether this was a younger son of Walter or a son of his son Robert.

The last documentary evidence of Walter is in a document from Prince Rainald von Chatillon dated May 10, 1154, in which he appears as a witness together with his son Robert.
