history

The previous building was probably a chapel from the 13th century for the miraculous image of St. Leonhard. The tower of this chapel is today's south tower, it is in contrast to the rest of the building.

Exterior construction

The rest of the building was built around 1500. The Gothic west tower with a low, star-vaulted vestibule also dates from this period. The two-aisled hall church with four bays adjoins the tower, the choir has moved in. The windows were changed in baroque style in the 17th century . The late Gothic west tower is 60 meters high, the lower four floors are above a square floor plan, above are three octagonal floors. The crowning pointed helmet is 19 meters high. The lower storey opens to the south and north with pointed arches, it is equipped with a mesh vault. The following floors are equipped with ribbed vaults. The square part of the tower is supported on two sides by buttresses. The octagonal part of the tower is closed off by a parapet, the strike clock was installed in 1683.

inner space

The two-aisled Gothic hall church is rare in Lower Bavaria. Mesh vaults can be seen in the choir and nave, the vaults of the main nave rest on four octagonal central pillars. The late Gothic gallery is equipped with a ribbed vault, the gallery was extended in the baroque period by almost a yoke length in the main nave. The windows have been changed in Baroque style, only the two north windows are still pointed arches. A Romanesque arched window has been preserved above the south portal on the south side of the nave. Two frescoes can be seen on the east walls in the choir, they still have the Baroque ornamental borders and were painted in the second half of the 17th century.

Furnishing

Most of the interior is baroque.

High altar

The high altar has a stately structure, it dates from around 1646. A representation of the Assumption of Mary is shown on the large central altarpiece. The altar panel is framed by columns entwined with vines, angel heads and notched pilasters. The side figures are life-size, they show Saint John with a cross and a lamb and the Apostle Bartholomäus with a knife and peeled skin. The Trinity is shown in the top picture and in the cartridge above. The saints Blasius and Wolfgang flank as side figures. The entrance to the altar is surrounded by a marble balustrade, it is the work of master stonemason Adam Stumpfegger from Salzburg. The pleasing rococo tabernacle was added in 1764.

Side altars

The two side altars, like the high altar, date from the middle of the 17th century. They are set up on the left and right in front of the choir room at a corner. The right altar is dedicated to St. Anthony, the left to St. Sebastian. Both altars are with pixit seb. Haas a Griesbach 1837 .

Side altars

Six side altars were given a new version in 1836; there are currently four side altars in the house. The cross altar from 1777 is on the north wall of the nave, the others are on the large central pillar, two of them show the Holy Trinity and the Holy Family in the altar leaves, they were painted by Sebastian Haas. The third altar on the central pillar is decorated with a figure of St. Leonhard from the early 15th century.

characters

Two life-size wooden figures represent St. Leonhard and St. Stephen. Leonhard is wearing a black and gold cloak, an abbot's staff and a book. Stephen is the patron saint of the parish church in the village, he is depicted down to earth. Stephanus is a work from 1480, Stephanus dates from around 1500, the carvers of the figures are not known. A group of figures stands above the south portal, it shows St. Martin with the beggar at his feet.

Treasury

The treasury is located in the basement of the south tower, here the iron offerings are kept. Votive offerings , including five Würdinger , iron blocks in human form. These Würdinger originate from the 16th century, presumably they are votive offerings of the noble von Würding.

Other equipment

  • Four bells hang in the tower, the oldest was cast in 1575, the other three around 1700.
  • The pulpit was renovated in 1836
  • In the choir and on the arch of the choir, a number of grave slabs made of limestone and red marble are embedded in the walls; they are reminiscent of the caretakers and the deans from the period 1631 to 1795.

Pilgrimage

People have been making pilgrimages to the village since the 11th century, so the Leonhardi pilgrimage is considered the oldest Leonhardi festival in Lower Bavaria. Nowadays, four-in-hand carriages are shown in a pageant , which have the origins of the pilgrimage as the theme.
