Inflammation mediator
Inflammation mediators are the body's own substances that initiate or maintain an inflammatory response in the body.
The inflammation mediators include both low molecular weight compounds such as histamine , serotonin , prostaglandins and leukotrienes and higher molecular weight peptide substances or proteins such as bradykinin , substance P , calcitonin gene-related peptides , complement factors and cytokines .
The effects mediated by inflammation mediators include, in particular, effects on cells of the immune system , such as chemotactic recruitment of leukocytes , cell proliferation and degranulation of mast cells and basophilic granulocytes . In addition, they can have effects on blood vessels (e.g. dilation and increase in permeability) combined with edema formation , and they play a central role in the regulation of fever.
