Epiphyllum oxypetalum is a species of plant in the genus Epiphyllum from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Greek words "ὀξύς" (oxys) for pointed and "πέταλον" (petalon) for leaf and refers to the pointed petals of the species.

description

Epiphyllum oxypetalum grows richly branched with strong shoots that can be up to 3 meters long. The main shoots are cylindrical and between 2 and 3 meters long. The thin, flattened, leaf-like side shoots are elliptical in shape and, with the exception of the edges, are wavy. They are up to 30 inches long and 10 to 12 wide.

The funnel-shaped flowers have an arched flower tube. With a diameter of 12 to 17 centimeters, they reach a length of 25 to 30 centimeters. The outer bracts are narrow and reddish, the inner bracts are up to 2.5 centimeters wide and white.

The plant rarely blooms, and only at night, and the flowers wither before daybreak.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Epiphyllum oxypetalum is widespread in the Mexican states of Chiapas , Oaxaca and Veracruz as well as in the Guatemalan department of Izabal at low altitudes. The first description was published in 1829 by Adrian Hardy Haworth .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
