Strawberry Moon ( English Strawberry Moon ) is a widely held term for a full moon in June . The name received media attention in June 2016, as the astronomical beginning of summer and the June full moon took place on the same day in the USA and the United Kingdom .

Word origin and history

Native Americans did not use any of the calendars in use today to keep track of the year. Instead, they were based on the seasons and phases of the moon . The Algonquin tribe used the term "strawberry moon" because at this time the strawberries were ripe and their harvest began. In Europe the terms "rose moon" or "honey moon" are also common.

Every full moon in June is called a strawberry or rose moon. A red coloring of the moon does not have to be present. A red or orange coloration of the moon is related to the long-wave components of sunlight . By breaking yellow, orange and red light waves, the moon's surface shines in a copper-colored light.
