Erer (Ethiopia)

Erer ( Amharisch ኤረር Erär ; of Afar errer "change of camels") or Erer Gota is the capital of the same Woreda Erer in the Shinile zone in the Somali region of Ethiopia . According to the 2005 census, it had 7,490 inhabitants.
Erer is located at an altitude of 1201 meters in an oasis at the foot of the Ahmar Mountains , at a transition over an alluvial cone of the Erer River .
WC Barker was told by an Ethiopian in 1842 that caravans from Ankober to Harar made a stop in Erer ("Errur"). The tribes in the area - the Gurgura , who are subordinate to the Issa - Somali in the north, the Argobba in the south and the Nole and Ala Oromo in the east - would frequent the place, especially in the dry season.
In 1886 a French traveler described Erer as a village at the crossroads of roads to Tadjoura , Zeila and Shewa , where Afar , Oromo and Issa meet.
Gota was founded at the beginning of the 20th century as a station on the Addis Ababa – Djibouti railway line and gradually grew together with Erer.
A palace of Emperor Haile Selassie near thermal springs was converted into a hotel during the Italian occupation . There are orchards around Erer, the largest of which belonged to the emperor before they were nationalized under the Derg regime. Fruits grown in Erer are sold in the markets of Dire Dawa (which is well connected by road) and Harar.
In 1997, of 5027 inhabitants, 38.07% were Somali, 33.1% Oromo, 21.24% Amharen and 4.97% Gurage .
