Eric Edwards, Baron Chelmer

Eric Cyril Boyd Edwards, Baron Chelmer MC JP TD ( October 9, 1914 - March 3, 1997 ) was a British Conservative Party politician who , among other things, was chairman of the National Executive Committee of the National Union of Conservatives and Unionist Associations and treasurer of the Conservatives Party was and in 1963 when Life Peer became a member of the House of Lords under the Life Peerages Act 1958 .

Life

Edwards, son of a colonel , solicitor and local politician of the Liberal Party , graduated from the Felsted School with a law degree from the University of London , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). He then worked as a solicitor in his father's office before joining the Essex Yeomanry and participating in World War II in the 147th Field Regiment of the Royal Artillery . For his military service in Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944, he was awarded the Military Cross and most recently promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and as such was Commanding Officer of the Essex Yeomanry between 1945 and 1946 . In addition, he was awarded a Territorial Decoration .

After the war, Edwards joined the Conservative Party with his father, but was defeated in the nomination of the Conservative Tories in the constituency of Southend . In addition to his employment as a solicitor, he was also active in the insurance and property sector and as a functionary in his party.

With the support of Harold Macmillan , Edwards, who was promoted to Knight Bachelor in 1954 and henceforth had the suffix "Sir", became deputy chairman of the Conservative Party in 1957 and, as such, was also chairman of the National Executive Committee of the National Union of Conservatives and Unionist Associations until 1965 ( National Executive Committee of the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations ). In this role, he and Oliver Poole revised the fundraising practice of his party by requiring the associations in the constituencies to submit a percentage of the donations, which were published annually at the party congress .

By a Letters Patent of 31 January 1963 Edwards was as a life peer with the title Baron Chelmer , of Margaretting in the County of Essex, according to the Life Peerages Act 1958 into the nobility raised and thus was until his death a member of the House of Lords .

When Harold Macmillan resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party shortly afterwards , Baron Chelmer stood up for Alec Douglas-Home as his successor, which led to internal party disputes, as Rab Butler and Quintin McGarel Hogg also tried for these offices.
