Eric Alan Hanushek (born May 22, 1943 in Lakewood , Ohio ) is an American economist . He is an expert in the economics of education and a fellow at the Hoover Institution .

Life

Hanushek received his BS from the United States Air Force Academy in 1965 with honors. His Ph.D. in economics he received from MIT in 1968 . From 1965 to 1974 he served in the United States Air Force . He has taught at the University of Rochester , Yale University and the US Air Force Academy , among others . For the government he worked as deputy director of the Congressional Budget Office , as an advisor in the Council of Economic Advisers and as an economist for the Cost of Living Council. He served on government education commissions in California and Texas . He is a member of the National Academy of Education and the International Academy of Education and is also a Fellow of the Society of Labor Economists and the American Education Research Association .

Hanushek is on the Texas Schools Project committee at the University of Texas at Dallas , a researcher with the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a member of the Koret Task Force on K-12 . He is on the Equity and Excellence Commission of the United States Department of Education and served as Chairman of the National Board for Education Sciences from 2008-2010 . He is currently the coordinator for education at the Center for Economic Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Hanushek developed the economic analysis of education as a leading researcher . His work on the efficiency, resource use, and economic impact of schools has influenced US and international education policy. His research areas include diverse topics such as the effects of teacher quality, learning assessment and class size on learning progress, and the role of cognitive skills in economic growth and development. His pioneering analyzes for measuring teacher quality based on the learning progress of students forms the basis for many studies for evaluating teachers and schools.
