Eric Over (born July 5, 1933 in Sheffield , † January 7, 2012 in Peterborough ) was an English football player .

Career

Over played for Sheffield FC in the Yorkshire League before he moved to the local first division club and rose to professional in November 1954 after a test training in the reserve team of Sheffield United . At the end of November 1954, Over came in a friendly against the Danish club Esbjerg fB for the first time and scored a goal, in competitive games mostly Colin Grainger or Derek Hawksworth were given preference on the left winger position.

For his first division debut, Over, who impressed with his speed, came on March 14, 1955 in a 1-0 home win against Sunderland AFC and five days later also formed the left attacking side with George Luke . The 5-0 away defeat by Tottenham Hotspur was their last competitive appearance for United. In early 1956, Over moved to AFC Barrow in the Third Division North for a transfer fee of £ 400 . In the weeks after his commitment, he came to eight goalless appearances before he was no longer included in the remainder of the season after a 6-1 loss to Oldham Athletic in March. This was followed by a few more missions in September 1956, before it was not used again until December 1956. Here he scored his first professional goal against Oldham Athletic, but broke his leg the following week in an FA Cup game against Chesterfield FC after a collision with opponent Dave Blakey .

Over returned to play at the beginning of the following season 1957/58 and moved to league rivals Oldham Athletic in December 1957 for £ 450. There he was part of the regular team from Christmas Day, but missed qualifying for the new single-track third division with the club as 15th in the final table . Set by Oldham at the end of the season on the transfer list, Over decided to end his professional career and joined the Grimsby Borough Police in the police force, for whose football team he remained active alongside other ex-professionals.
