Visually Impaired Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The visually impaired day (also called the day of the visually impaired ) is a national day of action in Germany to draw attention to the situation and concerns of people with visual impairments under the motto “I see the way you don't see” . Launched by the German Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DBSV) in 1998, it has been held annually on June 6th ever since.

Organization and content

The DBSV, its 20 regional associations with over 250 advice centers, other organizations and changing cooperation partners, such as the Professional Association of Ophthalmologists in Germany (BVA), the Central Association of Opticians and Optometrists , the Protestant and Catholic Church in Germany 2010 and the German Museum Association in 2018.

The purpose of the visually impaired day is to draw attention to the needs and problems of people with visual impairments. The events provide information on medical therapy options, aids and supplies such as visual aids , self-help groups, barrier-free work on the computer , rehabilitation of visual disorders and barrier-free design of the environment through contrasts and lighting.

At the same time, attention is drawn to existing problems that make cultural, media or social participation difficult for the visually impaired. This includes, for example, the requirement that household and entertainment electronics are designed in such a way that their use is also possible for the visually impaired, as well as medical devices such as blood glucose meters, insulin pumps or insulin pens, that forms are designed for the visually impaired and that timetables and information can be read by the visually impaired in public transport, that platform edges, steps and obstacles are marked in a contrasting manner in public traffic areas or that films with audio descriptions are offered.
