Eric Westwood (born September 25, 1917 in Manchester , † 2001 ) was an English football player who played primarily as a left defender. He was one of the few players who played for both Manchester United and Manchester City in their careers .

Career

Westwood began his career in the Manchester United youth teams. In 1937 he moved to Manchester City. From the 1938/39 season he was part of the first team and played 30 games. During World War II he was drafted and only played 23 games for City. He served in Normandy , among other places . However, he played as a guest for Chelsea, with whom he even won the War Cup Final in 1944.

After the war, he continued his career at Manchester City, where he won the championship in the Football League Second Division in 1947 . He also played twice for England's B national team. Westwood only missed three games for City in three seasons. When Manchester signed the German paratrooper Bert Trautmann as a goalkeeper after the war, with great public protest , Westwood supported Trautmann and greeted him with the words: There is no war in this cabin .

At the end of the 1952/53 season, at the age of 35, he left City on a free transfer and switched to FC Altrincham for two seasons , which at that time did not play in the English professional league.
