Erich Bornberg-Bauer

Erich Bornberg-Bauer (* 1963 in Vienna ) is an Austrian biochemist , theoretical biologist and bioinformatician .

Life

Bornberg-Bauer was to study biochemistry and mathematics in 1995 at the Institute of Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Vienna in Peter Schuster on comparison of evolutionary fitness landscapes of RNA and proteins doctorate . After a short time as a university assistant at the Institute for Mathematics at the University of Vienna, he worked as a post-doctoral student with Martin Vingron at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg on algorithms for sequence analysis until 1998 and as a project manager at the EML (now the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies ) until 2000 moved to the University of Manchester as a Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics . Since 2003 he has been Professor of Molecular Evolution and Bioinformatics at the Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity at the University of Münster .

research

Bornberg-Bauer dealt with aspects of RNA and protein evolution , especially with questions of neutral evolution as well as evolvability and robustness against mutations. Here he and Hue Sun Chan (Toronto) developed the concept of the super funnel on neutral networks , which postulates how molecular populations use gene drift to explore the sequence space in order to find transition sequences ( switches ) to new networks. He also led the development of the concept of a look ahead effect, which postulates that phenotypic mutations help to wander through the sequence space more quickly and thus drastically increase the probability of otherwise extremely improbable useful double mutations ( epistasis ). Since 2005 he has also dealt with questions of the modular evolution of proteins and since 2010 with the question of whether and how completely new de novo protein-coding genes can arise from non-coding DNA segments . Many of these approaches were successfully used in several genome analyzes, especially on social insects.

His work is mainly computational, but for some time has also been coupled with experiments on the directed evolution of promiscuous (multifunctional) enzymes and the analysis of de novo proteins. Born Berg's works have been shown by the German Research Foundation , the Volkswagen Foundation , the European Community and in 2006, 2013 and 2018 with research funds from the Human Frontier Science Program promoted.
