Erich Fürchtegott Heeger (born July 24, 1907 in Marienberg , Saxony , † February 25, 1959 in Leipzig ) was a German crop scientist . As director of an institute for special crops at the University of Leipzig , he researched the scientific basis for the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants in Germany.

Live and act

Erich Fürchtegott Heeger, son of a Rendanten , studied agriculture at the University of Leipzig from 1926 after graduating from high school and worked as an assistant at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding there from 1932, where he prepared the establishment of a variety register for medicinal, aromatic and aromatic plants. In 1935 he took over the management of a newly established variety register in Leipzig - Probstheida . From 1934 to 1936 he was a member of the National Socialist Motor Corps , and in 1938 he joined the NSDAP . In 1943 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a soldier .

After returning from captivity, he was able to continue his interrupted work in Probstheida in 1946. In 1950 he received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig with a dissertation on peppermint . In the same year he received a teaching position in the field of "Medicinal, Spice and Industrial Plants" at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Leipzig, where in 1952 he wrote a paper on the principles of arable and plant cultivation for the development of economic medicinal and aromatic plants qualified as a professor in Germany .

In 1952 Heeger was commissioned to set up an "Institute for Special Cultures" at the University of Leipzig. Together with committed employees, as director of this institute, he primarily developed the scientific basis for large-scale cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants in Central Germany. The focus of research in his institute was on quality research, quality breeding, nutritional physiology and cultivation technology.

In 1957 Heeger was appointed professor . The directory of his scientific publications includes over 120 articles. His species and cultivar knowledge of medicinal and aromatic plants (1950), which he worked on together with Kurt Brückner, should be emphasized. His most important publication is the " Handbook of Medicinal and Spice Plant Cultivation " (1956 - reprint edition 1989). The monumental, richly illustrated book with a volume of almost 800 pages is considered the German-language work of the century in this field. Through his work as a teacher, researcher, organizer and author, Heeger has had a lasting influence on the development of medicinal and aromatic plants not only in Germany but also in other countries.
