Erich Frank (doctor)

Erich Frank (born June 28, 1884 in Berlin ; died February 13, 1957 in Istanbul ) was a German doctor and internist . He was chief physician in Wroclaw and a university lecturer in Wroclaw and Istanbul.

He spent his school days in Breslau , where he attended the University's Medical Academy in 1902. After studying medicine and passing the state examination there, he went to the Kaiser Wilhelm University in Strasbourg in 1907 , where he received his doctorate in 1908. From 1908 to 1911 he worked at the Municipal Hospital in Wiesbaden and played an important role in the clinical trials of Salvarsan . 1911-1918 he was, first as an assistant at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical Faculty, again at the University of Breslau , where he was in the Department of Internal Medicine in 1913 with the signature Ortho Statistics albuminuria habilitation was and 1919 adjunct professor. Until 1925 was then as a senior physician at the Breslau University Clinic. Frank set a milestone in research into diabetes mellitus in 1926 with Synthalin, the first oral anti-diabetic drug . From 1928 to 1933, in addition to his work as a full professor, he was chief physician of the Wenzel Hancke hospital in Wroclaw. During the period of National Socialism persecuted because of his mother's Jewish ancestry, he took " Haymatloz " in 1934 a professorship at the University of Istanbul on.

In Turkey

From September 1, 1934 to February 13, 1957, he was director of the second chair of the Internal Department of the Medical Faculty in Istanbul's Gureba Hospital. In addition to metabolic studies, his areas of work included internal secretion, the vegetative nervous system and hematological issues. After a quarter of a century of intensive work, he left a large number of students in Turkey. He was called in as a consultant when Ataturk was last ill. As director of the Clinic for Internal Medicine at Istanbul University, he remained loyal to his adopted home until his death from a hepatic coma on the morning of February 13, 1957 as a result of liver disease at his desk in his clinic. He turned down several offers and calls from the USA. The Republic of Turkey honored him with a state funeral , which is said to have been attended by over a million people. In accordance with his will in his will, Frank was buried in Istanbul in the Muslim cemetery Aşiyan Asri Mezarlığı near the fortress Rumeli Hisarı .
