Erich Freund (economic functionary)

Erich Freund (* March 5, 1913 ; † March 21, 1998 ) was an East German economic functionary and from 1956 to 1958 rector of the College for Foreign Trade in the GDR .

Life

Freund comes from a working class family. He acquired an academic education in evening classes. In his youth he was involved in the labor movement. In 1928 he became a member of the Communist Youth Association and in 1930 of the KPD . During the National Socialist era, Freund worked illegally and was therefore imprisoned for a few months in 1933/1934. From 1936 to 1938 he was in contact with the Schulze-Boysen / Harnack group and was imprisoned for a few weeks in 1938.

After 1945 he took an active part in rebuilding society in the GDR. He was vice-president of a head office of the German Economic Commission (DWK), 1st deputy of the state secretary for the food and beverage industry and government commissioner for trade with the Federal Republic of the Ministry for Foreign Trade and Internal German Trade. From the beginning of the 1960s he was also co-chair of the bilateral committee for the promotion of domestic German trade. From 1956 to 1958 he was Rector of the University of Foreign Trade and later Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Trade and Director of the Institute for Socialist Economic Management Foreign Trade. He was involved in the training of direct and distance students as well as the further training of practitioners in East German foreign trade.

Erich Freund has been awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit several times . In 1988 he received the gold medal for the Patriotic Order of Merit. In 1961 he was honored with the Ernst Moritz Arndt Medal .
