Erich Hochstetter

Erich Hochstetter (born August 4, 1888 in Berlin , † June 16, 1968 in Greste ) was a German philosopher .

Born as the son of a pharmacist in Berlin, he graduated from the Luisenstädtisches Gymnasium and studied philosophy in Berlin, especially with Benno Erdmann . From 1916 to 1918 Hochstetter served in the First World War. In 1915 he received his doctorate and in 1926 his habilitation on philosophical-historical topics from the Middle Ages. In 1921, Hochstetter received a regular job at the Leibniz Edition of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . From 1927 he taught as a private lecturer at the University of Berlin , in 1930 he became an associate professor. Hochstetter was considered apolitical and without ambitions in the time of National Socialism . Nevertheless, he joined the NSDAP in early 1941 . In August 1942 he quit his job at the academy and became an unscheduled employee in the Rosenberg office . After 1945 he taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Münster and built up the Leibniz Research Center , which was officially established in 1956. His successor in 1968 was his pupil Heinrich Schepers . Hochstetter was married to a stepdaughter of Benno Erdmann. In 1960 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
