Heinrich Schepers (born December 24, 1925 in Hamborn ; † January 1, 2020 ) was a German philosopher and Leibniz specialist.

Career

From 1946 he studied under Heinrich Scholz (1884-1956) mathematics and philosophy in Münster. In 1957 he received his doctorate under Erich Hochstetter (1888–1968). Schepers also belonged to the circle around Joachim Ritter (1903–1974). From 1968 to 1997 he headed the Leibniz Research Center at the University of Münster. In 1971 he completed his habilitation on a medieval topic. In 1977 he became a scientific councilor and professor, in 1980 a full professor. Schepers was one of the outstanding Leibniz specialists and contributed significantly to the edition of his works in collaboration with the current Leibniz research and edition offices in Hanover, Berlin and Potsdam. As a pioneer in the field of digital humanities , in 1980 he dared to take the revolutionary step at that time of publishing the Leibniz edition with computer support and processing and optimizing it with the help of a special program ( TUSTEP ). He was co-editor of the Studia Leibnitiana , its special editions and supplements and the historical dictionary of philosophy .
