Erich Jeschke

Erich Jeschke (born January 7, 1925 in East Prussia ; † November 6, 1992 ) was a German civil engineer. He was instrumental in the reconstruction of the Semperoper and the residential palace in the Saxon state capital Dresden .

Life

Erich Jeschke grew up in East Prussia, where he also attended school. During the Second World War, he trained as a fighter pilot. He was taken prisoner by the Soviets for five years. In 1950 he took up an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in the GDR, later he qualified by studying at the technical college for construction in Gotha and then at the Technical University of Dresden, where he stayed until 1955.

Erich Jeschke got his first job in industrial construction. From 1959 to 1963 he stayed in Vietnam and a second time from 1972 to 1976. There he mainly helped to set up the glass factory in Hái Phòng .

The Semperoper today (2013)

From 1978 Erich Jeschke worked in the construction management of cultural and historical buildings at the Dresden District Council. His two largest projects were the reconstruction of the Semper Opera House, which was destroyed in the bombing on February 13, 1945, and the residential palace. He is primarily responsible for the meticulous restoration of the historic interior architecture of the Semperoper.

He played a key role in the opening of the exhibition The Dresden Castle - Monument to Saxon History and Culture in 1989 .

Already at retirement age, Erich Jeschke took over the management of the department for cultural and historical buildings in the State Building Authority Dresden I in March 1991 . As such, he died on November 6, 1992 after a brief serious illness.
